Kennametal is a US-based industrial materials and tooling manufacturer founded in 1938 by metallurgist Philip M. McKenna, who set up the business to commercialise a patented tungsten–titanium carbide material developed for higher-rate metal cutting. Over subsequent decades the company expanded internationally and built a portfolio around engineered materials and tooling for metalworking and other heavy industrial applications, including through acquisitions such as the Deloro Stellite Group in 2012 (bringing the Stellite hardfacing and wear-resistant alloy range into Kennametal’s portfolio).
For UK welding and fabrication professionals, Kennametal is most relevant in two connected areas: productivity tooling for machining and fabrication work (where its carbide and advanced-geometry cutting tools are used for turning, milling, drilling and related operations common in fabrication shops), and wear-protection/surface engineering associated with hardfacing and repair. Under the Kennametal Stellite range, it supplies hardfacing and thermal-spray consumables (for example rods, wires, powders and electrodes) and related equipment used in wear, heat and corrosion applications, which can be specified in maintenance, repair and overhaul work and in the manufacture of high-wear components. In the UK market, Kennametal operates through UK-registered entities based in Kingswinford (West Midlands) and supplies customers via direct sales and industrial distribution channels, making its tooling and wear-solution products accessible to UK metalworking and fabrication supply chains.
